French-Swedish prize for young researchers sponsored by Veolia Vatten

On 18 November 2010 the French residence in Stockholm was filled with people who had come to celebrate the winners of the French-Swedish prize for young researchers.

The prize that is divided in two categories, with three winners of each, was awarded in the presence of France's ambassador to Sweden, cooperation partners, protectors, sponsors, colleagues and family

In the category"Water, Sustainable Development and Innovation," sponsored by Veolia Vatten, Rosa Maria Garcia Sanchez, PhD at Lunds Universitet won the first prize. Rosa Maria works on a big challenge: how bioethanol can be produced from renewable sources without this having negative consequences for food production. The young researcher focuses on improving the process in which certain sugars transform lignocellulose to bioethanol. She has developed genetically modified yeast that increases the productivity of the process. Rosa Maria Garcia Sanchez is 29 years old and is originally from Barcelona.

The second and third prize were given to two PhD students at Kungliga tekniske högskolan in Stockholm : Anna Åkesson, for her work on developing a hydraulic-hydromorphologic analysis as a support for improved flood predictions, and Lin Li for her research on sustainable solar energy systems: Grätzel-solar cells and production of hydrogen gas from water.

The second category of the prize, "Health and biodiversity," was sponsored by L`Oréal and awarded works on stem cells, neurobiology and regenerative medicine as well as on traditional use of medical plants.

Veolia Water congratulates all the winners!
